Why are people surprised when they get a heart attack?
By Linda Lazarides
Call me hard-hearted (no pun intended) but I'm not able to muster up any sympathy for people who suffer heart attacks. Heart attacks are caused by a diet and lifestyle of too much alcohol, saturated fat, sugar, convenience foods, deep-fried foods, salty foods, and too little exercise, wholegrain foods, lentils, beans, fruit and veg. We all know this, our doctors keep telling us this, it's in all the magazines, so why be surprised when a heart attack strikes? It's the natural result of the average western diet, since according to the statistics about half of us will succumb. One reason I can't muster any sympathy is that I work hard at learning about my body and what it needs to keep healthy. Most of the people I know don't bother. They behave like children, hoping to get away without punishment and then blame God when it all goes wrong. I tried to help a neigbour once.. ..His wife came to me wringing her hands that her husband had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure and his doctor had warned him to change his diet or else... I am a professional naturopathic nutritionist, and it takes me half a day to prepare an assessment of a client's health and nutrition needs and write an individualized diet program based on what the client agrees to and says he can manage. Out of sympathy I did this for my neighbour and didn't charge him a penny. Two weeks later I caught a glimpse of his wife scurrying away through her front door, pretending she hadn't seen me. After another couple of weeks went by, I knocked on their door. 'How's the new diet going?' I said. 'Really sorry, she replied, Clive just can't stand oats, he doesn't like the food.' 'You mean he's not doing any of the program at all?' 'Sorry, no.' I was the one who was sorry - that I had wasted my time. Two months later, Clive was suddenly rushed to hospital with a heart attack. While in the ward he recognized about three people he knew, who were in hospital for the same reason. Not only had I wasted my time on Clive, I was also wasting the money I pay in tax to help fund the British National Health Service. Sadly for people like me, we pay the same for our health insurance as people like Clive - one sixth of our entire income, and it's compulsory. Don't be like Clive. Don't be childish. Learn about health. Learn to like good foods, or at least learn to eat them whether you like them or not. I've prepared a basic guide to healthy living which you can download from the link below. It's not specifically about preventing heart disease, but there's plenty more information on the internet.

An individual surprised by a heart-attack, is comparable to a couple being surprised by an unwanted-pregnancy... that is, if the parties involved are negligent of not being proactive in taking precautions.

Thank you for sharing this straight forward information, Linda. I am constantly amazed at the people everywhere, that have negelected their bodies and those of their children. Diet and exercise are so important, yet most people refuse to follow good health habits. Best wishes. Frederick
Genetic disposition should also be mentioned. Thanks for the intel. Please do not begrudge your neighbor the time you spent to help them; I watch my neighbors' or friends' kids while they go places, do things or make dinner for my elderly neighbor because their kids are far - without charging a penny either. Not everything is about money. They did not utilize your input, probably because most people get set in their ways, and they faced the unfortunate result. There might come a day when they come to your aid in some way.

Thanks, but the intel wasn't about money, it was about getting countless warnings and even free professional advice, and still having the childish idea that you can get away scot-free.
